I hope you have a lot of batteries for backup...or do you use a generator?

The solar panels charge large banks of batteries, but there is a propane generator for backup if that all fails, but it's not yet been needed.

This is an interesting idea.  I hadn't really thought about it before.  I am all for power conservation and I'm aware how much power running large servers can be.  Are your temperature controls solar powered as well?  If your propane generator needs to be used how long does the power transfer take?  Most generators take a minute to get up and running.

The entire data centre runs off solar, so that includes the servers, cooling systems, office stuff, the works. There's plenty of details on our website about the data centre and the network.

As for the backup generator, it's not really any different to the backup generators that all web hosts will (or should) have in place in case their mains power goes down, other than it's a propane powered gennies rather then diesel. Our reasoning being that out of all the carbon based fuels, it's one of the less polluting and more efficient, plus if there was ever to be a fuel spillage, it has less potential for causing major damage to groundwater, etc.

LOL ya better for the ground water because if there were a spillage it would almost immediately evaporate into a green house gas!  A better reason is that it is very clean burning and efficient.

Hi, If you want more options, go to http://www.buysolarwindhydro.com and look at the bottom, there's green web hosting there also.

Ah my mistake.  We've just been sorting out extending our Windows packages to include SQL but it hadn't gone live on the website.

It has now, so take a look and you'll see a new W-Solar 4 package that comes complete with 25MB of SQL 2000/2005 disk space, so you wouldn't need to install SQL2005 Express
