I buy organic food on a somewhat regular basis, usually from Whole Foods or Trader Joe's. But I was thinking how un-sustainable it is to hop in my car and drive miles to the nearest natural food grocery stores. Driving miles to get healthy, organic food, OR going to the supermarket in my town and getting food filled with GMOs, antibiotics, pesticides, and other cheap, refined, unhealthy subtances?! I live on Long Island and there are only two coops and a few natural food grocery stores, all of which require me to drive miles away.

Your driving miles away is costing the earth more GHGs.  LOL.  But maybe it is possible you can go by other means of transportation, like a bicycle?  Or go by train?

I have the same problem. The are organic grocery stores in my state but they are few and far between. All of them are at least an hour away. I just don't always have the time to make a 3 hour grocery trip. Then on top of that the prices are much higher than at a regular store, I would love to buy every thing organic but i just can't afford it. Any helpful hints to organic shopping?

Tell you what the best way of getting the freshest organic food is to grow some your own, probably seems alittle overkill but it can be very satifying if you have a back yard and some basic tips.
Itīs basically a hobby that gives you the best reward fresh vegetables. the only downside is you wont be able to grow everything. what you can grow depends on your region and alot of things wont grow through the winter.

Local co-ops tend to be a little more cost effective, as has already been pointed out.
